Silentor silencers for
Scania trucks and buses

Silentor® revolutionary silencer for Scania trucks and buses reduces low frequency noise and cuts fuel consumption by 1-3%

By autumn 2003 Scania CV introduced a new type of exhaust silencer on most of their trucks and buses worldwide. This ingenious design comes from Silentor who is specialised in developing high performance silencers for stationary plants, ships, and vehicles, and who is the patent holder.

Scania is a company at the forefront of truck and bus design excellence, continuously working to improve engine performance and, in keeping with their clients’ environmental awareness,  reduce noise as well as noxious emissions.

Seen from the outside, the new silencer looks almost identical to the original one; there is no increase in silencer volume, and no change has been made in the overall exhaust system configuration.

However, silencer internals are entirely new, using established acoustical and fluid-dynamical principles to create a simple, robust and manufacture-friendly, truly 3-dimensional flow configuration with significantly improved
operational characteristics:
  • Pressure drop across the silencer almost halved
  • Specific fuel consumption reduced by 1-3%, depending on driving pattern
  • Improved throttle response and hence better acceleration
  • Improved low frequency exhaust noise reduction, reducing the sound level
    inside the vehicle markedly

The lower fuel consumption caused by the reduced exhaust back pressure load on the engine is significant compared to the continuous year-by-year improvement achieved by refinements in the design of the engine itself.
